If most of your clients come through word of mouth referrals or from meeting you in person, you’re probably running a trust-based business. And that’s a really strong position to be in.
But it’s worth having a think about how many of those referrals are quietly slipping away before they ever get in touch?
Why referrals work so well
When someone recommends you, they’re doing something incredibly powerful: they’re lending you their credibility. The person on the receiving end of that recommendation already has a head start on trusting you – before they’ve spoken to you, before they’ve seen your website, before they’ve done anything at all.
A similar thing happens when you meet someone in person. They get a feel for how you think, how you communicate, what you care about. By the time they walk away, they have a genuine sense of whether you might the right person for them.
That’s trust built through experience. And it’s hard to replicate.
The gap that costs you work
So what’s the problem?
Someone gets a glowing recommendation and does what everyone does next – they look you up.
If what they find online doesn’t match what they’ve heard, something shifts. It might be subtle. Outdated photos. A website that feels flat. Social media that doesn’t quite reflect the business you’ve built. Nothing catastrophically wrong, just a small but persistent disconnect between the person they were told about and the one they’re finding.
That gap creates doubt. And doubt, in a trust-based business, is fatal.
What your online presence actually needs to do
It doesn’t need to shout. It doesn’t need to go viral. It simply needs to feel like you – consistently and confidently, across every place someone might land.
In practice, that means:
- Photos that show how you actually work, not just what you look like standing in front of a wall.
- Video that gives people a real sense of your approach and your values.
- A website and social media presence that backs up the reputation you’ve already built, rather than quietly undermining it.
Think of it this way: your referrals are doing the hard work of building initial trust. Your online presence just needs to hold it.
The question worth asking
If you’re getting most of your work through referrals and in-person connections, your marketing is clearly working in some areas. But is your online presence keeping up?
Remember that every referral that looks you up and isn’t quite convinced is a client you’ve already half-won – and then lost.
