“It’s an investment in your business.” You may have heard that line before, but what exactly does it mean?
The Cambridge Dictionary defines investment as “the act of putting money, effort, time, etc. into something to make a profit or get an advantage”.
Which sounds pretty cold.
The journey When we set up our business doing the thing we’re passionate about and helping our clients with the magic we bring, we don’t necessarily start off thinking about making a profit. In fact, for many of us, the whole money thing is a bit of an afterthought, and we spend years trying to build up to charging our worth (that’s a blog post for another time).
Instead, we work hard to provide the best product or service we can, and delight our customers and clients, because of the passion and dedication we bring.
But we are all-too-aware that our business needs to pay for itself, and pay us, otherwise we’re not running a business, but an expensive hobby. We look at our numbers, we work out our pricing, we ride the highs and weather the lows.
Investing in our business at the start is about setting ourselves up with what we need: the tools of the trade, the training, everything we need to generate that income. But we might not think of it as investing at this stage.
Our business grows
Our business grows, and we begin to realise it’s time to level up: To look more professional and polished, to stand out more, to be more memorable. Now is the time we start to look at investing in a more professional website, branding, photography and more.
When we do this we’re making it easier for the very people we can most help. We become easier for them to find, easier for them to identify with, and easier for them to remember.
The clarity that strong story-telling images, good branding and clear messaging provides helps to grow trust with our potential clients, and that familiarity they gain with you is much more likely to lead to sales and recommendations.
The reality: What investing in our business means
Investing in your business can be as simple as continued development with training courses and working with a mentor or business coach.
But a great website with copy that really speaks your ideal client’s language, and strong branding are all investments in your business too. As is great story-telling brand photography – because photos convey your message quickly, clearly and in a way that captures the attention of your audience and helps them to picture what working with you is like.

The power of brand photography works in two main ways:
– by saving you time (and therefore money), so you can focus your energies on your strengths at the core of your business
– by helping your audience to quickly and easily understand who you are and what you’re all about, and – crucially – if you’re right for them.
Your story-telling images help to build trust with your potential clients. They’re seeing your images, and, drawn in by them, reading your words. They’re building up a mental picture of what it will be like to work with you, and understanding how working with you is an investment in their life, business, happiness or success.

You’ll feel more like the grown-up business owner you are. And this increased confidence can work wonders for your business too!
